Glorious victory of Gujarat

With the help of half-centuries from Laura Wolfart and Ashley Gardner, Gujarat Giants registered their second win in the Women’s Premier League (WPL), defeating Delhi Capitals by 11 runs here on Thursday. This is Delhi’s second defeat in five matches. For Gujarat, Wulfart scored 57 off 45 balls which included 6 fours and a six. Gardner scored an unbeaten 51 off 33 balls with the help of 9 fours. Both of them made an important partnership of 81 runs for the third wicket. Apart from these, Harleen Deol scored 31 runs in 33 balls. For Delhi, Jess Johnson took two wickets for 38 runs.

Delhi’s batting did not work

Only four Delhi batsmen reached double digits, in which Marijan Kapp scored the highest 36 runs. Arundhati Reddy scored 25 runs in 19 balls in the last over, at one time Gujarat’s face was forced. Gardner also did wonders in bowling and took two wickets for 19 runs. Apart from him, Kim Garth and Tanuja Kanwar also took two wickets each. Delhi did not have a difficult target but despite maintaining the run rate, they made things difficult for themselves by losing wickets at regular intervals. Delhi scored 78 runs in the first 10 overs but lost four wickets in the meantime. Shefali Verma was able to score only 8 runs and was bowled by Tanuja Kanwar (2/29). Skipper Meg Lanning scored 18 runs before being dismissed by Sneh Rana.

RCB’s exit is also fixed

With Gujarat’s defeat, RCB’s hopes of reaching the playoffs are almost over. It was very important for Delhi to win this match against Gujarat for RCB to reach the playoffs.

The best finish that RCB can get in the league stage is third place. They can make it to the Eliminator only if:

1. RCB won both their remaining matches.

2. Mumbai and Delhi win their matches against UP Warriors and Gujarat Giants.

3. Gujarat Giants beat UP Warriors on 20th March.
