In the Bilkis Bano case, the difficulties of the convicts who are being released may increase. In fact, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petitions filed against the premature release of the convicts. Let us inform that in the year 2002, in the case of gangrape with Bilkis Bano, all the 11 convicts were released prematurely. The convicts were sentenced to life imprisonment but on 15 August 2022, these prisoners who were serving their sentence in Godhra Jail in Gujarat were released by the Gujarat government under the amnesty policy. Some of those released have served 15 years and some 18 years in jail.

Bilkis Bano, through her lawyer Shobha Gupta, filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the release of the convicts. A bench comprising Chief Justice DY Chandrachud and Justices PS Narasimha and JB Pardiwala assured Bilkis Bano and her lawyer Shobha Gupta of constitution of a new bench to hear the petitions. Bilkis Bano’s lawyer Shobha Gupta told the need for an early hearing on the matter.
